They dreamed of her sometimes, knew the sadness in her, felt her slowly dying heart and soul. Earthbound, bound to an artificial means of travel, legs unable to support her on land anymore. The loons knew her. Knew her soft skin, knew her attempts to change her plumage, knew her desire for a mate of her own and her fear of the long, empty days she saw ahead, even as she refused to allow any near her.

Sometimes they flew over the dead waters to the north, circled, pulled to her flame. They called to her in the darkness, in her dreams---in their dreams. She knew them as well, but did not know.

Tonight they sensed her nearby, so close they could find her if they dared the dry land. The loons considered taking to the air and making a sweep, but unless she came to the water, they would not be able to share their mystery with her.

Tucking heads under wings, the loons dreamed of being a blue-haired girl, scared and alone among her flock.
